Cardiff Projects Round Up

Cardiff is a city that has seen huge amounts of high-rise development over the past few years, but this could turn out to be merely the tip of the iceberg if current plans for the city see the light of day.

Only recently, it was announced that plans for Bay Pointe in Cardiff Bay had been reworked and resubmitted by developers Bay Pointe Ltd. In addition to a complete redesign, the number of towers in the scheme was increased from three to ten, all of varying heights.

The tallest saw an increase from 36 floors in the previous scheme to 41 floors now. The development as a whole will now include a total of 2,400 apartments. Planned to be built in a number of phases, it is expected to be completed between 2014 and 2016 depending upon market conditions.

Bay Pointe may seem a while off, but there will be much development activity between now and then. What follows is a round up of the major mid / high rise projects under construction or planned for the next few years:

Under Construction

Meridian Gate (21 floor hotel + 11 floor residential) concrete core at 3rd floor level, completion due Oct 2008

Celestia, towers 1, 2 and 3 (16 + 16 + 11 floors) towers 1 & 2 externally complete, tower 3 completed

Century Wharf: Strata (15 floor residential) structural work commencing

ISIS 3D (13 floor residential) topped out, completion due 2008

Victoria Wharf Phase 2 (2 x 13 floor residential) one block externally complete, second block nearing external completion

Central Hotel redevelopment (11 floor office) ground-work commenced

St Davids 2 (£535 million new shopping centre, residential and library development, up to 11 floors high) demolition of the entire site complete; foundations of John Lewis dept store nearing completion; library core at approximately 3rd floor level

Construction Expected to Start 2007/08

Prospect Place, Block T (19 floor residential) final phase of the 'Bayside' scheme at Prospect Place

Uncertain / Post 2008

Glass Needle Scheme (32 + 22 + 20 floor residential) After three planning applications over the course of four years, and multiple planned start dates having come and gone with no news whatsoever, we were beginning to think this one isn't going to happen! Recent reports however, suggest that the project has gone back out to tender, so there may yet be hope...

Cardiff International Sports Village Super Casino & Hotel towers (21 + 15 floors hotel & casino) Since the refusal of the super casino bid, the status of this aspect of the sports village project is uncertain. It is likely that new or revised proposals will have to be submitted for this site.

Cambrian Marina Towers (2 x 15 floor residential) Little information is available on this project at present except that they are apparently due to be released for sale near the end of 2007.

Bay Pointe (10 residential towers up to 41 floors tall) completion due between 2014 and 2016.
