Found the problem 
For some unknown reason your..... 'Allow members to contact me by email : By a website form...... By email client software........ No '
was set to no, have changed this and its okay now

I don't think the email settings should stop the PM's getting through, they are separate things.
It sounds more like a database error so that would probably need to be looked at by the Forumotion people if it continues.
