Re: Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare UK
depends an escort van second hand tax and tested and diesel to save money you could kit out and buy for less than £500.

Van
We're looking at the possibilities you said above but our biggest problems are that we dont have a huge amount of money available, especially as our funds are draining daily with kennelling fees at the moment. It also has to be really reliable because if it breaks down we just don't have a few hundred to spare to fix it so it'd have to be fairly new and with parts we could cheaply replace like Fords or Vauxhalls.

Re: Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare UK
We recently bought a used low mileage Peugeot Expert van, put a couple of thousand down on it and a supporter took out a personal loan for the rest, we are paying her back each month if we have the funds to do so, if not she is happy to wait. We do work hard at fundraising so hopefully we should meet payments unless an emergency occurs.
It is a lovely van and we did get a good deal on it, the after sales service is also very good.
I did look round at some cheaper/older vans, but you do get what you pay for and unless you can do your own repairs etc it would probably cost a fortune to keep them on the road. Also there is nothing worse than setting out on a journey and not knowing if you will arrive or not! An old van is ok for local journeys, but when you are carrying dogs across the country the last thing you need is an unreliable van!

Van
A light commercial van is basically something the size of the average saloon car but instead of back seats they have storage space in the back. If you look on the roads you see them all the time; Citroen Berlingo, Ford Connect, Peugeot Expert, Renault Kangoo, Vauxhall Astravan etc. The reason these are better than ordinary cars is that they are specifically designed for load-bearing with low bootsills, large back and side doors and also easier to drive for long distances.
I hired a Berlingo yesterday to take a dog upto the North and it was a pig to drive. I was exhausted by the time I'd driven 600m. The best I've ever driven was a Ford Connect - really easy with light controls and clutch.
I have no idea about the costs of vans although I've been told for a couple of thousand we could get a very good one possibly with warranty which would be very important.

Re: Neapolitan Mastiff Welfare UK
Didn't know we had to update this but no, we got nothing from the 'Wish List'. That's okay though, some people have been very kind (you know who you are!) donating what they can afford so we can buy things. We just thought it was easier for people to help by donating a worming tablet or a flea treatment pipette now and again when they get their own.
